Inheritance of Beta Carotene Content in the Wild Tomato Species Lycoporsicon cheesmanii

چکیده
Beta carotene and lycopene, the two principal colored carotenoids present in tomato fruit, were measured in mature fruit of parental, F,, F2, and backcross populations derived from an initial cross of an orange-fruited accession of the wild tomato species Lycopersicon cheesmann Riley with the cultivated tomato L esculentum Mill. Segregation patterns for fruit pigmentation and percentage beta carotene in F,, F2, and backcross populations fit expected models for a single dominant gene conditioning a high percentage of beta carotene and resultant orange fruit pigmentation The inheritance of beta carotene in L. cheesmanii paralleled that of the 6 gene described in L. hirsutum. Variation in colored carotenoid content indicated a parental influence on total lycopene and beta carotene content and suggested independent genetic control of these carotenoid levels.

Modification and Dominance of the Gene Governing Formation of High Concentrations of BETA-Carotene in the Tomato.
ROM the progeny of crosses between normal canning tomatoes, LycoperF sicon esculentum Mill., and the wild species L. hirsutum Humb. and Bonpl., LINCOLN et al. (1943) and KOHLER et al. (1947) isolated a new tomato type which was distinguished from normal tomatoes by producing orange fruits in which most of the carotene produced was beta-carotene. From the study of a cross between the red canning...

The fungal pathogen Alternaria alternata f. sp. lycopersici produces AAL-toxins that function as chemical determinants of the Alternar ia stem canker disease in the tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). In resistant cultivars, the disease is controlled by the Asc locus on chromosome 3. Our aim was to characterize novel sources of resistance to the fungus and of insensit ivity to the host-selective ...

متن کاملChanges in contents of carotenoids and vitamin E during tomato processing.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different types of tomato processing on contents of lycopene, beta-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol. Samples of tomato sauce, tomato soup, baked tomato slices, and tomato juice were taken at different times of heating, respectively, after each step of production. HPLC was used to analyze contents of carotenoids and vitamin E. Due to the loss ...
متن کاملOptimizing sampling of tomato fruit for carotenoid content with application to assessing the impact of ripening disorders.
Color defines one aspect of quality for tomato and tomato products. Carotenoid pigments are responsible for the red and orange colors of tomato fruit, and thus color is also of dietary interest. The aims of this study were (1) to determine the relative importance of field sampling and analytical replication when measuring lycopene and beta-carotene in tomato fruit and (2) to determine the effec...
